Kosher Wines
Kosher wines must be produced in accordance with strict Jewish dietary laws known as "kashrut". These rules govern who may handle the wine during and after the winemaking process, and what they use it for. In most cases certified kosher wines must be made by or the winemaking process supervised by Sabbath-observing Jews. Anything used in the winemaking process like yeast or fining agents must also be certified as kosher.
Key Kosher Wine Regions
Traditionally kosher wines have been made in a very sweet style, but this has changed in recent years with the emergence of new and innovative kosher wineries. Many of these are located in Israel where demand for high-quality dry kosher wines has encouraged young winemakers to experiment. Important sub-regions in Israel include the Judean Hills, the Golan Heights and Galilee. You can also buy excellent Kosher wine made in parts of Spain, Italy, and California.
Kosher Wine Food Pairings
Kosher wines are often purchased to enjoy on Jewish holidays alongside traditional dishes. Red kosher wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot or Syrah typically pair well with hearty dishes like cholent stew or beef brisket. White kosher wines made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc are good matches for potato latkes or grilled fish.
