Why do Pinot Noir wines vary in color intensity?

The depth of color of Pinot Noir wines is determined by many factors and inherent thinness of the skin of the grape is one of reasons for lighter colored wines. Also maceration time, the time during which the juice is in contact with the grape skins, can influence color depth in the same way, where the longer the maceration time the deeper the hues. Furthermore, the environment in which the grapes grow may affect color extraction; grapes from the cooler climate render lighter color wines since they ripen slowly and are more acidic. Various fermentation and aging techniques may also be applied by winemakers to determine the ultimate color of wine, reflecting the different styles and expressions of Pinot Noir.
