What are the main wine regions in South Africa?

South Africa is home to several specialties of the wine region, every one which has a unique set of environmental conditions and soils. While Stellenbosch, located a few miles off Cape Town is perhaps the best known winery, it is notorious for making good red wine, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux blend. In its midst lies Franschhoek, a beautiful town surrounded by exquisite mountains, famous for world class wine estates where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate the landscape. Paarl is well-known because of warm climate, different soils and strong red wine that mostly confers Shiraz and the controversial grape variety - Pinotage.
