Donna Olimpia was the wife of former owner Gherardo della Gherardesca who decided to rename the estate in honour of the couple’s 25th wedding anniversary in 1898. Today the winery is in the capable hands of Guido Folonari who sought to re-energise the estate in the 2000s by producing bold Super Tuscan wines from classic Bordeaux varietals.
Campo Alla Giostra is the Italian term for a field used for training horses and takes its name from the famous race horse Varennes who was trained here on the estate in the 1950s. This single varietal Cabernet Sauvignon is made with perfectly ripe grapes which are fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 18 months followed by 6 additional months of ageing in the bottle before it is deemed ready for release.
On the nose there are seductive aromas of blackberry, currants and cocoa, while the palate offers crushed wild berries, licorice and hints of green bell pepper. The first sip reveals a smooth entry followed by a full body, fresh acidity and firm tannins that will soften with further ageing over the next decade or so.
