Why is it called Champagne?

Champagne is named after the Champagne region of northeastern France where it was first made. The name is legally protected under French law and only sparkling wines made in this region by traditional methods can be called Champagne. The one and only terroir of the Champagne region, together with the stringent production rules, is responsible for the special flavor and quality of this celebrated sparkling wine.
