Why is Chardonnay so sweet?

Chardonnay sweetness is affected by several factors such as residual sugar from fermentation, aging process in oak, and malolactic fermentation that converts the sharp malic acid to softer lactic acid, creating a soft texture and perceived sweetness. Further, the warmer climates cause the grape to ripen more and increase its sugar content which makes the wine to have a sweeter profile.
