What distinguishes sweet wines from dry wines?

The main thing that makes sweet and dry wines different is in their levels of the residual sugar. Sweet wines tend to keep a lot of unfermented sugar, making them peppy and sweet, and on the contrary, wines from dry varieties have few residual sugars, thus revealing a crisp and refreshing mouthfeel. In case the sugar level differs (is either higher or lower the wine will be perceived differently by the consumer and will have a different overall flavor profile. Winemakers, grape species, and climatic conditions provides the basis for identifying a sweetness level of a wine.
