Valpolicella, one of Italy’s premiere viticultural zones of the province Verona, is a region of rolling hills and smallholdings famous for wine production. In the heart of Valpolicella is the Zenato Estate, a family owned winery since the 1960s. Initially planted by Sergio Zenato, the vineyards and winery continue to carry on the tradition of the region, the community and the indigenous grapes. Known primarily for Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grape varieties, the region is known for light table reds and the bolder Amarone.
The Sergio Zenato Riserva Anamrone is only produced in top vintages, and is made from a hand-picked selection of Corvina and Rondinella grapes grown in the oldest vineyards in the Valpolicella township of Sant’Ambrogio. Following drying and fermentation, this wine undergoes a long aging of at least 4 years in Slavonian oak casks. Made with the utmost care and intention, this wine represents the legacy of Sergio Zenato.
The nose opens up with blackberry compote, tobacco, herbal eucalyptus, black licorice and nutmeg with a jamminess that extends to a spicy finish. The palate is not shy with bold flavors of dark chocolate, coffee, dried prunes, baking spice and gravel backed by chewy tannins and a zippy acidity to balance the fruit-driven sweetness. Smooth and elegant, yet opulent, this wine can be enjoyed with a variety of meats, osso bucco, hearty stews, and blue cheese.
