Vincent Girardin set up shop in 1980, with a modest 2 hectares of vineyards in Côte de Beaune, inherited from his family. That has grown into a patchwork collection of the region’s Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards, which are used to create a gorgeous range of classic Burgundy wines.
Meursault is one of the most consistently great appellations in the Côte de Beaune, regarded just as highly as its southerly neighbour, Puligny-Montrachet. With their roots in limestone-rich soil, the vines here produce a distinguished, mineral-edged taste of Burgundy. This wine is made from 50-year-old Chardonnay vines and is a truly stunning example.
The nose is dominated by notes of minerality, fresh vegetation, citrus fruits and toasted nuts. It spent 15 months ageing in French oak barrels, imparting an undeniably round and buttery mouthfeel. If given some time to age, this Meursault wine will become even smoother, and oaky notes will develop further. In a mouthful, you will discover a delightful nutty side, along with notes of lime and citrus blossom, lemon verbena and buttery toast. It shows a significant acidic backbone, and can easily be aged for 10 years. Consider pairing it with chicken in a creamy sauce, blue cheese, or seafood.
