Tenuta Ulisse is one of the leading wineries in Abruzzo thanks to their daring and visionary approach to making modern wines that reinterpret the region’s classic local grape varieties. The roots of the winery go back to a small vineyard planted by Antonio Ulisse near the town of Crecchio in the 1900s, although it was only in the 21st century that the present day winery was founded by his grandsons.
All of the fruit used by the winery comes from three vineyards owned by the family, allowing them to control every aspect of the grape growing and winemaking process. This limited edition bottling has been created in honour of Antonio, the original founder of the winery, who is fondly regarded as the patriarch of the family.
Fruit is typically left on the vine late into the season to reach maximum ripeness and then harvested by hand. Once in the winery the juice is partially fermented in stainless steel tanks and cement tanks followed by 12 months of ageing in French oak barrels. The result is a powerful, exuberant red that’s bursting with ripe dark fruit character and attractive hints of spice, bitter chocolate and licorice. Thanks to the bold flavour profile and punchy structure, it’s a great wine to cellar for a few more years or to enjoy now with hearty red meat dishes.
