Located in Healdsburg, in the heart of Sonoma County, Ramey Wine Cellars was founded by renowned winemaker David Ramey and his wife Carla. Starting in 1996 with Chardonnay, Ramey now also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Syrah, working with vineyards in Sonoma and Napa Valley using old-world winemaking techniques. Their world-renowned wines have a European style with all the typical California fruity character.
The wine is a blend of majority Syrah with a touch of Viognier. The grapes come from Rodgers Creek Vineyard and Cole Creek Vineyard, located on the Sonoma Coast, on volcanic gravel silt and clay loam soils respectively. The Syrah and Viognier are fermented together in tanks with indigenous yeasts, and the finished wine sits on the lees for 18 months.
The wine has a dense color and an intense and broad aromatic profile. On the nose, it reveals notes of blackcurrant and plum, lavender and green olives, and some balsamic and gamey notes. On the palate, it is soft and medium-bodied with a well-balanced freshness and good fruit concentration. It has velvety tannins and a juicy and persistent finish. It is versatile in pairings but its ideal partners are red meat and game.
