In 1897, at the age of 23, Luigi Einaudi purchased a farmhouse near Dogliani. Despite his important commitments (Einaudi was later elected as President of the Italian Republic, the highest office in the state), he never stopped dedicating himself to the family vineyards, and today Poderi Luigi Einaudi is a prestigious Piedmontese winery, managed by his great-grandson Matteo Sardagna.
Barolo Ludo is a wine made with Nebbiolo grapes from the youngest estate vineyards in the municipalities of Barolo, Monforte d'Alba, and Verduno. The name Ludo comes from the Latin word for "game," referring to the idea of playing with the grapes from the various plots. The vines, planted between 1967 and 2002, enjoy south/southeast exposure and calcareous marl soils. Vinification takes place in glass-lined concrete vats, and the finished wine ages for approximately 30 months in a mix of barrels of various sizes, followed by a further 6 months in the bottle.
In the glass, the wine reveals a dark ruby color with delicate garnet highlights. Its aromatic profile is intense and exuberant, with notes of raspberry syrup and red berries, hints of dried flowers, and spices. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, powerful and concentrated, with a pleasant acidity and firm, ripe tannins. The finish is long and pleasantly fruity. Try it with braised wild boar or roast beef.
