This wine represents a more soft and charming style of Grüner Veltliner when it is compared to Weingut Nigl’s firmer Private label. The nose has enticing aromas of freshly sliced yellow apples. The mouthfeel is full and vivid due to its slightly more viscous quality. The acidity is soft and well-integrated. A spicy minerality accompanies the medium length finish.
Food to pair with this wine include seafood and shellfish based dishes. Its rich mouthfeel would make it a great accompaniment to richer seafood like salmon and the subtle spice and minerality on the finish would pair with a seafood dish like bouillabaisse or paella.
The name “Freiheit” translates to “Freedom” and is used to acknowledge that this land was some of the first privately owned vineyard land that the church or the state did not control.
The grapes are sourced from Weingut Nigl’s vineyards in the Sentenberg area of Kremstal. Weingut Nigl follows strict environmental protection programs that were established by several government agencies. They respect the land that they grow their grapes on and approach wine winemaking in a similar fashion. The wine is bottled at night when the cellar is coldest because the winemaker feels like this preserves the freshness of the wine.
