Matetic Corralillo Syrah 2015

Originally from the Croatian coast, the Matetic family emigrated to Chile in 1892 and soon settled in the country’s southernmost tip, Punta Arenas, where they established a sheep farm. After careful study of the local terroir, in 1999 the family decided to start making wine and planted vineyards just 15km from the Pacific Ocean in the valley of Rosario. The hot, sunny summer days and cooling breezes from the ocean make it an ideal spot to produce top quality Chilean wines.

This Syrah is part of their Corralillo series which is named after a historic wine cellar in the Rosario Valley where wine used to be made from the indigenous Pais grape. Today the family sources fruit for this bottling from San Antonio as well as Maipo and Colchagua. Biodynamic practices are used in the vineyard and winery to grow healthy, top quality grapes according to the rhythms of Mother Nature. Once in the winery the Syrah grapes are vinified and then matured in French oak barrels for 12 months.

The result is a robust and muscular Syrah with powerful aromas and flavours of crushed dark berries, plums, and dark cherries seasoned with black pepper, licorice and cigar box spice. The firm tannins and well-built structure make it a great partner for red meats.
