The Matetic family moved from Croatia to Punta Arenas in Chile’s southern tip in 1892 and began sheep and dairy farming in the region. In 1999 the family made the move into winemaking and after studying the local terroir extensively they decided to plant their vines in the Rosario Valley just 15km from the Pacific Ocean. Conditions here are ideal for premium winemaking thanks to the hot, sunny days, cool nights and breezes from the ocean which help moderate temperatures during the summer.
This wine is part of their Corralillo range which takes its name from an old wine cellar in the Rosario Valley. Fruit is sourced from Maipo near Santiago, Colchagua and San Antonio and the vineyards are managed according to biodynamic principles to produce the best quality grapes possible. Following vinification the young wine is aged in French oak barrels for 11 months.
On the nose there are enticing notes of red berries, dried herbs and spice while the first sip reveals an elegant structure, light body and fine tannins. The vibrant, fruit-forward character of this Pinot makes it a great choice to pair with duck, tomato-based pasta dishes, or a generous platter of cheeses and charcuterie.
