Set close to the Hungarian border in southeastern Austria, Eisenberg is one of the country’s best kept secrets for delicious and spicy reds made from the local Blaufrankisch grape. Blaufränkisch is often nicknamed the “Pinot Noir of the East” thanks to its freshness and ripe berry flavours, and is well-suited to the steep hillside vineyards of Eisenberg.
Hermann Krutzler was one of the pioneers of the grape here some forty years ago when he made his famous “Perwolff” red. Today the estate is in the capable hands of his son, Reinhold Krutzler, who continues to set the benchmark for Eisenberg Blaufränkisch with his delicious and age worthy wines.
This Blaufränkisch Reserve is crafted from some of Eisenberg’s oldest vineyards and matured in large oak barrels to add polish and refinement. On the nose there are spicy black pepper notes along with dark berry and cherry aromas. The first sip introduces a generous full body, well-built structure and firm tannins which will respond well to cellaring over the next 5-8 years. If you prefer to enjoy it now, this elegant red is ideal for serving with red meat dishes or tomato-based pasta sauces.
