Now owned by famous movie director Francis Ford Coppola, Inglenook has a long and noble history which dates back to 1882 when the first vintage was produced here by retired sea captain Gustave Niebaum. The estate was purchased by the Coppola family in 1975 as a private summer home to give respite from the fast-paced movie world, and over the past few decades it has gained a reputation for top quality premium Napa wines.

Inglenook is located in the heart of Napa’s famed Rutherford Bench which produces exceptional fruit with ample richness and elegant minerality. Their 1882 Cabernet first debuted in 2012 and serves as a tribute to Gustave Niebaum who had the foresight and innovation to dig a cellar into the hillside to mature his wines in barrels in optimum conditions. The label even features a depiction of this cave-like cellar.

The 1882 is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon from selected plots on the estate depending on the vintage, with a small amount of Petit Verdot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc added for complexity and balance. Following vindication the young wine is aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months in Niebaum’s original cellar. The result is a majestic, full-throttled Cabernet with a refined structure, luscious dark fruit character and a very long finish seasoned with violets, tobacco leaf, chocolate, vanilla and woodsmoke. A great bottle to keep in the cellar for another decade or so, or enjoy now alongside hearty red meat dishes.
