The Galil Mountain Winery was founded fairly recently, in 2000, but wine has been made in this part of the Upper Galilee for at least two thousand years. Thanks to the sunny Mediterranean climate and high altitude vineyards, conditions here are ideal for producing complex wines from international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.
Meron is primarily composed of Syrah along with a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot grapes. Once in the winery the fruit is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve varietal typicity and the young wine is then fermented in French oak barrels for 14 months before bottling takes place.
Rich cherry jam, dark plums and crushed wild berries burst out of the glass while the first sip reveals a generous full body, smooth, ripe tannins and a silky smooth texture. The finish is long with ample dark berry notes and hints of baking spice, tobacco leaf and dark chocolate. This is a great wine to keep in the cellar for another few years or enjoy now with venison, roast beef, or a leg of lamb cooked with plenty of fresh herbs.
