The flagship wine of iconic Italian producer Angelo Gaja, this breathtaking Barbaresco is a fitting testament to Angelo’s devotion to proving to the world the incredible potential of Piedmontese wines. When Angelo took over the 110-year old family estate in 1970, he immediately began a program of modernisation and innovation inspired by forward-thinking winemakers in Bordeaux and California.
Although controversial at the time, Angelo’s use of temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and small oak barrels for ageing were soon adopted across the region. His larger-than-life personality and magnificent, characterful wines propelled Barbaresco and Barolo on to the world stage, winning critical acclaim from top wine writers all over the globe.
Angelo’s Gaja Barbaresco is crafted with grapes sourced from fourteen different parcels which are fermented separately in stainless steel tanks followed by twelve months resting in small barriques. At this point the final blend is curated and the wine spends a further twelve months in traditional large chestnut botti or casks.
The result is a majestic wine much coveted by collectors that has both elegance and power with firm tannins, fresh acidity and an incredibly long finish. The aromas and flavours evolve over time after the bottle is opened, revealing complex layers of ripe plums, dried violets, sour cherries, cigar box spices, licorice and sunbaked earth. Accompany with a splendid filet mignon if you plan to drink this wine young, or store it in your cellar for up to a couple of decades to appreciate the mindblowing brilliance of aged Barbaresco from one of Italy’s finest winemakers.
