Flaherty is a small boutique winery founded by Ed Flaherty, a Californian who came to Chile in 1993 to work a harvest and then never left. For a few years, Ed worked as an executive winemaker with some of the top wineries in Chile including Cono Sur, Errázuriz, and Tarapacá. In 2004 he started his winery producing 1.200 bottles of a single red blend which has grown to about 40,000 bottles in 2015. Flaherty Wines is one of the founding members of the Independent Vintners’ Movement (MOVI), a trade organization for small owner-involved wine projects.
The Flaherty Tequel Cauquenes is a red blend of Sirah, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the Tequel vineyard, purchased in 2008 and planted between 2010 and 2011, using traditional cultivation techniques. The Tequel vineyard is located in the Chilean region of Maule, on deep red clayey soils of granite origin. The short distance from the Pacific Ocean guarantees a refreshing effect.
The wine shows intense and complex aromas of wild blackberry, raspberry, cherry plum, licorice, and some leather notes. On the palate, it is enveloping and rich with juicy tannins and a good mineral finish. Try it with grilled meat or roast lamb.
