In 1959, two great wine-making families were joined through the marriage of Léonard Humbrecht and Geneviève Zind. The enterprising couple created Domaine Zind-Humbrecht, built a new cellar in the commune of Wintzenheim and started acquiring plots of abandoned vineyards in some of the best Alsatian terroirs.
While the Humbrecht family have only been producing wine since 1959, they have been growing grapes in Alsace for well over 300 years. Those at Domaine Zind-Humbrecht bring deep, generational knowledge to their cultivation of cool climate varietals, including Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Riesling. This “Roche Roulée” Riesling is sourced from a silty valley floor, in one of France’s driest micro-climates.
The bouquet on this wine is classic Riesling, exhibiting a mixture of lime, nectarine, lemon peel and apricot. There are also deep notes of minerality, similar to fresh rain or wet rock. Remarkably pure notes of fruit and minerality continue to the palate, buffered by notable acidity. An appealing pale gold, this wine has a vigorous personality and plenty of room for further development in the bottle. It’s a perfect example of Alsatian Riesling, and great for any occasion with food. Serve it alongside Chinese or Thai food, rarer roasted birds like duck or goose, or a seafood dish.
