Cotarella Montiano 2022

Founded by the renowned winemaking brothers Riccardo and Renzo Cotarella, the Cotarella winery is located in central Italy, straddling Lazio, Umbria, and Tuscany.

Montiano is a prestigious red wine from Lazio, crafted from Merlot grapes planted by Montpellier specialists in the Montefiascone and Castiglione in Teverina area (province of Viterbo). Since its inaugural vintage in 1993, the wine has garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative character and exceptional quality, particularly notable given that the region had previously focused almost exclusively on white wines. The Merlot grapes are sourced from vineyards situated at an altitude of approximately 300 meters above sea level, on volcanic soils rich in stony material. Following a manual harvest and meticulous selection, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks; the finished wine then ages for about a year in new Allier and Nevers oak barriques.

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep, brilliant color with dark ruby ​​hues. Its aromatic profile is broad and ripe, featuring notes of sour cherry, redcurrant, and blackberry interwoven with hints of vanilla and other sweet spices. On the palate, it is rich yet not opulent, soft, smooth, and elegant, boasting good fruit concentration and velvety tannins. The finish is long and complex. It is the ideal wine to pair with grilled red meat.
