The noble Salis family have an ancient history in this corner of Lombardy, settling in the seventeenth century in the town of Tirano where they built a stunning palazzo. It is also said the family were among the first to bottle wine in Italy when they began bottling their Barolo and Marsala wines in 1869 to send to European nobility in order to maintain favourable diplomatic ties.
Today the winery still uses the original 16th century wine cellars which have been restored to their former glory and are passionate about crafting wines with a genuine sense of place. The conditions here in the valley of Valtellina are ideal for crafting exceptional red wines thanks to the ample summer sunshine and an elevation of 700 metres which helps to preserve freshness in the grapes.
The Capo di Terra takes its name from where the Adda river first enters the commune of Tirano and is carefully crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. In accordance with Valtellina’s winemaking traditions, the grapes are crushed partially before fermentation in order to highlight the complexity of the fruit. The result is an elegant red wine which exudes ripe plum and dark berry notes along with sweet spices and cigar box aromas from the 15 months of ageing in oak.
