Capcanes Costers del Gravet 2015

This luscious Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha blend is made by the historic Capcanes winery which was founded by five local families in the Montsant wine region of Catalonia in 1933. Today the cooperative is composed of many family grape growers who have been tending their vines for generations and know this land like an old friend.

The grapes destined for this wine are sourced from a single vineyard called Costers del Gravet which is set on ancient granite terraces on north-east facing slopes. This location reduces the vines’ exposure to the strong Mediterranean sun, helping to maintain a balancing freshness in the wine alongside the rich fruit character. The plot also includes many Garnacha vines which are up to 70 years in age and produce intensely flavoured grapes.

Following the harvest the grapes are vinified separately and then aged in a mixture of new and used French oak barrels for 12 months before the final composition of the blend is decided. This produces a full bodied, powerful wine with seductive aromas and flavours of crushed berries, pencil lead and sweet spices from the maturation in oak. The juicy, concentrated fruit character make this wine an excellent partner for roasted red meats, hard cheeses or hearty winter stews.
