Founded in the mid-1800s by Clemente Santi, the Biondi Santi estate in Montalcino is regarded as one of Tuscany’s most prized viticultural treasures. Clemente was renowned for his scientific knowledge and studies which informed his approach to winemaking, enabling him to produce some of the first red wines that were suited to extended cellar ageing. Today the estate is in the capable hands of Franco Biondi Santi who is assisted by his two children who will one day become the next generation of the family to make exquisite Brunello di Montalcino on this land.
The family’s Brunello di Montalcino Greppo is typical of the classic Biondi Santi style, exuding elegance and charm over a firm structure and fine tannins which will help the wine to age beautifully over the next decade or so. The Sangiovese Grosso grapes used for this wine are sourced from the family’s Greppo estate and following vinification the new wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels for at least 36 months.
If you do decide to drink this wine now you will discover a wealth of bright red cherry and crushed wild berry aromas and flavours and a well-rounded full body. Those who are able to hold on to a bottle or two for a bit longer will be rewarded as the wine develops and matures in the cellar. This exuberant, youthful fruit character will develop into complex layers of dried herbs, leather, dark chocolate, and earthy hints which will linger long on the tongue.
