“Biblia Chora” was the ancient name used by writers like Hesiod to refer to the wine region around Mount Pangeon which was known for an unusual and exceptional grape variety brought here by the Phoenicians. Today this winemaking legacy lives on through Biblia Chora winery which was founded in 1998 by talented winemakers Vangelis Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. The duo immediately recognised the region’s potential and have planted some 65 hectares of vineyards which are farmed organically.
Their Areti white wine is crafted from the local Assyrtiko variety which is known for its elegance and verve. The fruit for this particular wine comes from estate vineyards in Ampelia which are blessed with excellent calcareous and loam soils, helping to lock in plenty of freshness and delicate aromatics. Once in the winery the grapes are pressed and the juice fermented in stainless steel tanks followed by several months of maturation on the lees.
Bright notes of fresh citrus like tangerine, lychee and grapefruit dominate on the nose while the palate reveals softer notes of mango and passionfruit. There’s a medium body and smooth texture thanks to the lees ageing as well as a long, clean finish. Serve with seafood or fish dishes as well as lighter meats like chicken.
