Located in Franschhoek, the Bellingham winery has a long history dating back to 1693, when Gerrit Janz van Vuuren and his wife planted the first vines on the estate, which was then known as Bellinchamp ("beautiful fields''). After a series of different owners, in 1943 Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk bought the farm that, at the time, was in a state of abandonment, and restored the manor house and the vineyards, bringing the ancient estate back to life. After some research trips to France and Germany, the Podlashuks released the first Cape rosé in 1949, followed rapidly by the Premier Grand Cru in 1951 and the first South African pure Shiraz in 1956.
Bellingham The Bernard Series Old Vine Chenin Blanc reveals a vibrant aromatic profile made of intense notes of citrus and tropical fruits, hints of ripe lime, stone fruit, honey, and sweet spices. On the palate, the wine shows its full fruity flavors and a pleasant freshness. It is a round, lively and balanced wine with distinctive fruity notes and a slightly spicy finish. Serve it at 12 - 14°C and enjoy it in combination with fish and shellfish, Quiche Lorraine, or semi-hard cheeses such as Gruyere.
A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!
