Founded in the mid-90s, the Altos Las Hormigas winery owns approximately 40 hectares of vineyards located at approximately 1300 meters above sea level, in the Uco Valley region of Argentina. Here, the vineyards enjoy sandy-loamy soils with a high percentage of calcium carbonate, and the beneficial protection of the Andes, which covers them from ocean winds. The company, owned by the 4 partners Alberto Antonini, Attilio Pagli, Carlos Vazquez, and Antonio Morescalchi, focuses its production on Malbec, the most representative grape of the Argentine wine scene, giving particular attention to the terroir.
The Malbec grapes come from the Gualtallary vineyards. After fermentation in small tanks with native yeasts, the wine is aged in untoasted oak foudres for 18 months and for a further 12 months in the bottle.
Altos Las Hormigas Malbec Appellation Gualtallary has an intense and deep color with ruby tones and purple hues. Its aromatic profile is broad and complex with the typical notes of dark fruit (especially plum and blueberry), but also herbaceous and mineral hints. On the palate, it has a medium-full body. It is juicy and well-balanced. It has firm and well-integrated tannins. The finish is long, with delicious fruity notes and a marked mineral vein. Try it with grilled meat.
