Nebbiolo
Travaglini Il Sogno 2018
Cellar for up to 15 years. Decant for 1 to 2 hours before serving.
Travaglini is a family winery, now led by its fourth and fifth generations. It was established in the 1920s in the centre of Gattinara, by trailblazer Clemente Travaglini, who saw the untapped potential of this cool, Alpine-influenced region.
Gattinara is one of Italy’s oldest appellations, achieving DOC status as early as 1967, and DOCG status in 1990. It is most famous for bold, mineral-rich Nebbiolo wines, distinct for growing on volcanic soils. However, those at Travaglini utilise every aspect of the bold Nebbiolo. Il Sogno, or “The Dream”, is made in Amarone style, by withering the fruits on drying racks and ageing them for 3 years in huge, Slavonian casks.
The result is a powerful, dry red wine, bearing refined flavours that are characteristic of the Nebbiolo grape. On the nose, look for intense aromas of cherry, blackberry and plum, underscored by notes of balsamic vinegar and spice. It is warm and savoury in the mouth, enveloping the palate in a blanket of blackberry jam, black cherry, cocoa and hints of medicinal herbs, such as liquorice and star anise. Il Sogno will make for a delectable culinary experience, paired with a meaty stew or risotto with a rich tomato sauce.
