Stolpman Vineyards occupies a stunning setting in Ballard Canyon in the hills of California’s Central Coast. Over two decades ago Thomas Stolpman discovered this slice of paradise and following an intense bidding war he was able to secure 220 acres of prime land here. The site is ideally suited for producing elegant and refined red wines thanks to the cooling influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean and the limestone ridges which preserve the natural freshness and delicate aromatics in the grapes.

The Estate Syrah is crafted from 50% whole bunch grapes which are fermented with wild yeasts and matured in old oak barrels. The result is a bold, hugely ageworthy Syrah which is reminiscent of the great wines of Cornas in France’s Rhone Valley.

On the nose there are notes of violets, black olives, dried rose petals, and intense dark fruit. The first sip reveals a full body carefully balanced by a streak of freshness, ripe but firm tannins, and generous cassis, dark cherry, bitter chocolate and crushed berry flavours. This is a well-built, powerful Syrah which will continue to age and develop over the next decade or so.
