Rapaura Springs is a famous New Zealand winery owned by the Neylon family and located in the lower Wairau Valley area of Marlborough. The company, which collaborates with numerous local vinegrowers, produced its first vintage in 2007. Today Rapaura Springs makes a range of wines of different levels based on Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Chardonnay. The latest vineyard acquired is the Blind River, south of Awatere, planted mainly with Sauvignon Blanc. Next to the cellar, there is instead the Spring Creek Vineyard, the smallest property, planted in 2008 with Pinot Noir grapes for the Reserve Pinot Noir Rosé.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this wine are sourced from the Bull Paddock Vineyard, located in the Dillons Point sub-region, where the shallow but nutrient-rich soils and cool climate ensure ideal conditions for this variety. The resulting wines show concentrated tropical flavors and good complexity.
The wine has a clear and brilliant color. The aromatic profile is intense and dominated by fresh tropical notes of passion fruit and papaya, fresh grapefruit, and herbaceous notes. On the palate, it is lively and juicy with excellent acidity and a persistent and pleasantly tart finish. It goes well with vegetarian dishes, pasta with pesto, and goat cheese.
A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!
