The Quinta Vale D. Maria Douro Tinto is crafted from grapes sourced from the oldest plots on the estate which have an average age of sixty years. These prime vineyards are planted with over 40 indigenous varieties including Tinta Amarela, Rufete, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca, Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, and Sousão which have been used in the Douro for generations. This exquisite red is a field blend which offers a unique snapshot of Portugal’s little-known varietal heritage.
All of the grapes used in this wine are trodden by foot in shallow stone troughs called lagars according to the age old process used to make Port wines in the region. Following vinification the wines are matured for 21 months in French oak barrels before the final blending takes place.
This enchanting dry red wine opens with complex aromas of dried violets, black cherries and plums while on the palate there is a full body, firm tannins and intense flavours of berry jam balanced by a fine acidity. The bold yet refined character of this wine makes it an excellent special occasion wine especially when paired with prime cuts of steak or a hearty beef stew.
