Established at the end of 1800 by Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, after the purchase of approximately 300 hectares of land, Quinta do Vale Meão is today a very prestigious winery, managed by the Olazabal family, who acquired it in 1998. The company produces wines from grapes coming from its own vineyards. Here the most widespread variety is the Touriga Nacional, which gives its best on the unique soils of the Douro valley.
The Douro Tinto is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, and Tinta Roriz, foot pressed in granite containers called lagares. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barrels.
The wine has an intense and deep color with ruby tones. Its aromatic profile is broad and complex with notes of ripe dark fruit and herbaceous hints. On the palate, it is full and round with dense and well-integrated tannins and a fresh and balanced acidity. The finish is long and elegant and recalls light spicy notes. It is a characterful wine, which can remain in the cellar for a few years, but it is also perfect to drink now paired with red meat or game.
A Birthday to Remember with DAOU & Colomé Celebrating my mother’s birthday was made even more special thanks to two incredible wines—DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Colomé Auténtico Malbec 2020. The star of the evening was undoubtedly the DAOU Cabernet Sauvignon. From the first sip, it enveloped us in its rich, velvety embrace. The deep dark fruit flavors, hints of cocoa, and perfectly balanced oak made every glass feel like a true indulgence. It was bold yet elegant, a wine that effortlessly brought warmth and joy to our gathering. Seeing my mother savor each sip with a smile made it all the more memorable. The Colomé Auténtico Malbec also delivered beautifully, with its pure expression of high-altitude Malbec. It was powerful, with ripe blackberries, spice, and a smooth, lingering finish—an excellent complement to the evening. These wines didn’t just enhance our meal; they became part of the celebration, elevating every toast and conversation. A heartfelt thank you to DAOU and Colomé for making this special occasion truly unforgettable!
