Wines included in a case
Polvanera 17 Primitivo 2014
As soon as you pour out a glass of this sumptious Primitivo you’ll notice the stunning inky purple hue and intense aromas of crushed blackberries, ripe plums and hints of black tea leaves and rose petals. The first sip reveals a full body, smooth texture and rich dark berry flavours complemented by licorice and graphite which will pair perfectly with red meat dishes like steak frites or a hearty beef stew.
The delicious Polvanera 17 Primitivo is the creation of Filippo Cassano who has been instrumental in the revival of the Primitivo grape in recent years. The grapes for this wine are all sourced from Filippo’s vineyards which sit at 350 metres of altitude on a limestone plateau in Gioia del Colle. These conditions suit the Primitivo grape well, helping to retain freshness which balances out the intense flavours of the grape.
Filippo has been making wine in this part of Puglia since 2003 and works all of his vineyards organically to produce the best quality grapes possible. Following the harvest the grapes that are destined for this wine are fermented and macerated for four weeks in stainless steel tanks before being left to mature in the bottle for at least 12 months.
San Marzano Primitivo di Manduria Sessantanni 2015
Lovers of big, bold and juicy reds will adore this Primitivo which combines power with balance and elegance. The nose is an explosion of bright cherries, sweet plum jam, and hints of licorice, sandalwood and cinnamon while the first sip reveals a rich full body, smooth texture, an intense hit of ripe dark berries and a very long finish.
To craft this powerful wine San Marzano only use grapes harvested from their 60 to 100 year old vines which produce tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit. This 40 hectare vineyard known as the Valle del Sessantanni or “Sixty-Year-Old Valley” is one of the oldest in San Marzano and contains bush vines which had been abandoned prior to their discovery and rehabilitation by the Cantine San Marzano. The terra rossa or ‘red soil” here is rich in iron which gives the vineyard its striking colour and combines with the warm climate to offer ideal growing conditions for the Primitivo grape.
Following the harvest and fermentation of the must, the wine is aged in oak barrels for 12 months to add sweet spice character and additional complexity. Ideal for savouring on a cold winter’s evening by the fire, this characterful wine also makes an excellent partner for hearty meat dishes like a lamb chop, beef stew, or fresh pasta served with a rich ragu sauce.
Schiena Angioino Primitivo Di Manduria 2015
Intense ruby red tinged with deep purple, this Primitivo displays colors of ripe raspberry, coupled with aromas of strawberry and red cherry. Following the ripe red berry scents comes a sweet spicy note of cinnamon and nutmeg, stirred together with fresh ground coffee and vanilla beans. Complex aromas are followed by integrated flavors of dried fruit and baking spice, herbaceous undertones and a hint of tobacco leaf. With impressive acidity and structured tannins, this wine has good cellaring potential.
Enjoy this red alongside aged cheese and spicy salami, pair with a savory appetizer course or see how the flavors explode when poured with a meaty leg of lamb. Wonderful with food, but balanced enough to enjoy on its own.
Grown on the family owned and operated Schiena Estate in southern Italy, the Primitivo grapes were hand harvested in late September. Following a 12-15 day maceration period and temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel, the wine was aged in American oak barriques for 6 months, allowing the beautiful baking spice and vanilla notes to develop amongst the bright fruit character. Careful viticulture and attention to detail throughout the wine making process has created this award winning 100% Primitivo. Gold Medalist in the “Mundus Vini” International Competition, this wine will make a lovely addition to your cellar. Enjoy now and for years to come!
Morella Old Vines Primitivo 2015
Morella is the passion project of Lisa and Gaetano who met in 2000 and decided to pursue their mutual love of wine by producing a small quantity from ancient bush vines in Manduria in southern Puglia. The couple now have 5 hectares of old bush vines and have dedicated their project to preserving and revitalising these unique vines that are a vital part of the local landscape.
This majestic Primitivo begins life in Morella’s best vineyards which is planted with gnarled 75 year old vines on Puglia’s characterful terra rossa clay soils on a bed of limestone. These ancient bush vines produce exceptional quality grapes thanks to their reduced yield and the intense Mediterranean climate which is moderated by the presence of the sea just 2 kilometres away. Lisa and Gaetano use biodynamic practices in the vineyards in order to work in harmony with Mother Nature and produce the best quality grapes possible.
Following the harvest the vinification begins in the winery and the new wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months followed by at least 18 months additional ageing in the bottle. The result is an exquisite expression of Primitivo which opens with intense fruit aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, and cherries along with hints of kirsch and tobacco. The first sip reveals a full body, smooth tannins and rich dark berry flavours complemented by dark chocolate and licorice.
Cannito Drumon Riserva 2011
Drink now through 2026. Decant at least 30 minutes and serve at room temperature.
You will be happy you came across this hard-to-find 100% Primitivo from D.O.C. Gioia del Colle! This wine sat happily, for 24 months, in new French oak barrels that underwent a medium toasting before being bottled and cellared to be released this year.
Pull the cork and you will be greeted with scents of black cherry, ripe blackberries, dried violet with a hint of licorice and smoke. “Drúmon” Riserva Primitivo is bursting with jammy, ripe red berry essences, silky tannins and lingering heat. Composites of blackberry jam and roasted black cherries give way to the peppery spice and licorice that elegantly weave their way from the bouquet to the delicious, lingering toasty finish.
Desirable pairings would be with red meat – grilled, roasted or stewed, lamb, large game, pasta dishes with red sauce, stuffed pheasant, and dark chocolate with berries and cream.
Primitivo grapes are widely believed to be the ancestor of California’s Zinfandel grape. Both varietals boast jammy red berry essences, inky pigmentation and high sugars. “Drúmon” Riserva Primitivo is the perfect example of the latter translating into a higher than average alcohol content at 16% ABV. It is also the second highest-priced D.O.C. Gioia del Colle wine available for purchase.
Cannito Vini Biologici has been producing Organically grown grapes for wine for over 20 years. In addition to the vineyards, the farm also Organically cultivates and produces olives, olive oil, almonds and cherries.
Morella Mezzanotte Primitivo 2017
Owners Lisa and Gaetano have been producing wine from ancient bush vines in southern Puglia since 2001 and now have a total of 5 hectares of exquisite old plants. The couple farm their vineyards organically and biodynamically to produce the best grapes possible which in turn allow them to make sensational wines.
This stunning Primitivo offers a fascinating taste of both young Primitivo and ancient bush vine Primitivo thanks to the blend of grapes from two different sites. One site boasts vines with an average age of 40 years which produce intensely concentrated, rich grapes, while the other was planted in 2005 and contributes a lighter, fresher touch to the blend. Both sites are planted on Puglia’s characterful terra rossa or “red soils” over a base of limestone and sit just 3 kilometres from the sea which helps to moderate the intense southern Italian summers.
Intense fruit aromas immediately captivate the senses with crushed blackberries and dark cherries seasoned with hints of dried Mediterranean herbs. The first sip reveals a full body balanced by a touch of freshness and plenty of jammy fruit flavours along with licorice and dark chocolate. The bold flavour profile makes this an excellent partner for a prime steak or a generous plate of rigatoni with beef ragu.
