The island of Korčula on Croatia’s stunning Dalmatian Coast is home to a rare white grape varietal. According to legend, the Pošip vine was first discovered in a forest, growing up the trunk of a pomegranate bush - hence the name, derived from “po šipku”, or “up a pomegranate”.
Pošip Čara is a winery for discerning consumers, who are interested in drinking wine that comes straight from the source. Founded in 1984, it is the world’s oldest producer of this niche varietal and is located in the same tiny village where Pošip was first grown. Marco Polo was created from Pošip vines planted on gravelly, unfavourable soils, formed over a limestone base, granting it a layer of cool minerality.
It is an appealing golden yellow through and through. Upon uncorking, the wine wafts scents of orange peel, rough underbrush, fig and almond blossom. It showcases a round, nutty mouthfeel on the palate, coupled with notes of white-fleshed stone fruits, herby hints of garrigue and dried fruit. It is a medium-bodied, creamy experience, with a long, pure finish. Best served chilled, at approximately 12 °C. Pošip is a fantastic partner for Mediterranean dishes - pair it with hummus and flatbread, poultry or white fish.
