Easily Australia’s most famous winery, Penfolds was originally founded in 1844 by Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary with vines they brought with them from France. Since then the estate has evolved into one of the world’s top fine wine producers and is continually pushing the boundaries of winemaking with different grape varieties and viticultural techniques.
This attractive cuvee is dominated by Shiraz with some Mataro, or Mourvedre as it is known in France, completing the blend for additional complexity. Bin 2 was first produced in the 1960s and has been recently reintroduced thanks to the sublime yet unusual combination of punchy Shiraz and earthy, savoury hits from the Mataro. Fruit for this bottling is sourced from the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills and after vinification the wine is aged for 12 months in both new and seasoned French oak barrels.
In the glass, Penfolds Bin 2 Shiraz exhibits a deep garnet color with aromas of blackberry, black cherry, vanilla, and spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich with flavors of black fruit, dark chocolate, and oak, complemented by a firm tannic structure and a long, complex finish. This big, bold red wine is best enjoyed with hearty, meaty dishes such as steak, lamb, or game.
