With a history dating back to 1906, Nervi-Conterno is the oldest producer in Gattinara still operating. In 2018, the winery was acquired by Roberto Conterno, the head of the famous Giacomo Conterno winery. Gattinara is an often overlooked branch of the Piedmont region, famous for Nebbiolo wines that often surpass Barolo in terms of their longevity. This one was sourced from the volcanic soils of Valferana, one of the most celebrated crus in the region, known for imparting a bloody, iron-rich quality to its wines.
Nervi’s Vigna Valferana begins with a stunning bouquet of balsamic, tart red berries, salty iron minerality, and dried rose petals. Being composed of 100% Nebbiolo, it will require some breathing time to reveal its full potential. After fermentation in stainless steel, it spent 36 months in oak, ageing in a mixture of French and Slavonian barrels.
It appears a bright red in the glass, with slight hues of orange. On the palate, you can discover mouth-filling notes of sour cherry and red currant, with hints of tobacco, fresh leather, dried herbs, and balsamic. This wine is ideal for pairing with bold dishes, such as venison, beef, and mature cheeses.
