Mount Langi Ghiran has passed through many hands over the decades. The Fratin brothers from Veneto came first, laying foundations and planting the first vineyards, before passing the torch to wine consultant Trevor Mast. Now the winery is in the hands of the Rathbone family and Chief Winemaker Adam Louden, who has brought the winery triumphantly into the 2020s.
All of the exceptional talents who built Mount Langi Ghiran were drawn by the region’s unique terroir. The name comes from an Aboriginal phrase meaning “home of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo”, and the estate’s vineyards are among the most isolated in Australia, situated in the rugged, yet scenic, Grampians region of Victoria.
This Shiraz is awash with scents of dark fruits, including blackberry, black cherry, blueberry and floral hints of rose petal. The deep scarlet colour that shows in the glass is just an indicator of this wine’s powerful character. It is fiercely fruity on the palate, bursting with notes of cassis, plum and ripe blackberry. Secondary flavours of aniseed, minerality and peppery spice are backed up by abundant acidity and well-defined tannins. It is big in character, without being heavy or overwhelming. Suitable for long-term cellaring. Consider pairing it with herby legs of lamb, fine-aged cheeses, or braised beef.
