Morella is the passion project of Lisa and Gaetano who met in 2000 and decided to pursue their mutual love of wine by producing a small quantity from ancient bush vines in Manduria in southern Puglia. The couple now have 5 hectares of old bush vines and have dedicated their project to preserving and revitalising these unique vines that are a vital part of the local landscape.
This majestic Primitivo begins life in Morella’s best vineyards which is planted with gnarled 75 year old vines on Puglia’s characterful terra rossa clay soils on a bed of limestone. These ancient bush vines produce exceptional quality grapes thanks to their reduced yield and the intense Mediterranean climate which is moderated by the presence of the sea just 2 kilometres away. Lisa and Gaetano use biodynamic practices in the vineyards in order to work in harmony with Mother Nature and produce the best quality grapes possible.
Following the harvest the vinification begins in the winery and the new wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 14 months followed by at least 18 months additional ageing in the bottle. The result is an exquisite expression of Primitivo which opens with intense fruit aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, and cherries along with hints of kirsch and tobacco. The first sip reveals a full body, smooth tannins and rich dark berry flavours complemented by dark chocolate and licorice.
