Lisa and Gaetano met in 2000 and quickly discovered a shared love of wine which led them to make their first experimental batch from old bush vines in 2001. They quickly decided to invest in 5 hectares of these ancient Puglian vines and have made a name for themselves as top producers in the region.
Morella is best known for its exquisite old vine Primitivo wines, but the estate also produces some exceptional blends exclusively from indigenous varieties. This example is composed of equal amounts of Primitivo and Negroamaro, a deeply coloured variety that is only grown in Puglia. Lisa and Gaetano source the grapes for this blend from their own vineyards which have an average age of 50 years and produce incredibly concentrated grapes.
Following the harvest the couple ferment the grapes in open vats and then transfer the wine to French and American barriques where they are aged for 10 months. The final step before release is to mature the wine in the bottle for a further 8 months to fully integrate the two varieties. The result is a smooth and rich red with an intense red berry character, hints of dried herbs, and a very long finish.
