Nikteri is Mikra Thira Winery’s take on a traditional Santorini white blend. It opens up with scents of citrus zest, chamomile tea, stone fruits and liquorice. The Assyrtiko grape adds a distinct minerality to the wine, while portions of Aidani and Athiri add floral aromas and softness. The fruits were harvested from the small island of Therasia, which sits in the centre of the Santorini island group.
Mikra Thira was the first winery to be founded on the island of Therasia, which was separated from Santorini’s main island, Thera, during an ancient volcanic eruption. It is home to its own special microclimate, which winemakers Vaggelis Gerovassiliou, Vassilis Tsaktsarlis, and Ioanna Vamvakouri use to full effect. They completed their first harvest in 2018, but have quickly cemented themselves in the wine world with a gorgeous range of indigenous Greek wines.
Nikteri is dry, crisp, and bright golden in the glass. It’s perfect for those who enjoy bigger white wines, bringing a dense, oily mouthfeel and a full spectrum of fruit flavours. Look for notes of peach, apricot and lemon underpinned by hints of brioche and toasted nuts, gained from ageing in French oak barrels for 4 months. Nikteri is a great wine for pairing with pungent cheese, poultry, or a wide variety of seafood.
