Martin Ray is a historic brand of Californian wine, bought in the 1990s by Courtenay Benham. Since the 2000s, the headquarters and winery have been located in Santa Rosa, in the Russian River Valley. The company's vineyards cover 5 hectares of land, but the winery mainly purchases grapes from external growers to produce its range of wines. Cabernet Sauvignon Synthesis is the flagship wine of the Martin Ray winery, made with small additions of Merlot, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc.
The grapes come from the best vineyards of Napa Valley, both those at the bottom of the valley located on alluvial soils with a warmer climate and those in the mountains with their volcanic soils, to create a harmonious and representative combination of the denomination as a whole. The harvest is manual and the fermentation takes place in open air tanks for about 2 weeks. The finished wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak.
The wine shows a broad and intense aromatic profile with notes of ripe red fruits, especially cherry, blackberry, and currant, and then herbs and elderberry and some earthy and resinous hints. On the palate, it has a full body. It is firm and well structured with well-integrated tannins and a bright acidity. The finish is long and well-balanced and recalls hints of caramel. Excellent with beef brisket.
