Marques de Grinon Summa Varietalis 2013
Drink now through to 2026. No need to decant before serving.
The “Summa” or “Sum Total” of two generations of experience of working the unique Dominio de Valdepusa vineyard, the Summa Varietalis is an inspired blend of Syrah. Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from the renowned Marques de Grinon estate in Castilla-La Mancha. The current owner, Carlos Falcó, has family links to this estate which can be traced back as far as 1292 and has become a legendary figure in Spanish winemaking thanks to his innovations and visionary approach over the past five decades.
He was one of the first in Spain to start using drip irrigation and night harvesting, as well as pioneering the use of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes in Spain during the 1970s. In 2003 Carlos’ Dominio de Valdepusa vineyard became the first in Spain to receive the prestigious D.O. de Pago title which recognises the country’s finest vineyards.
All of the grapes for the Summa Varietalis are sourced from the Dominio de Valdepusa vineyard where the pure limestone soils help to give a certain elegance and distinctive hints of minerality to the wine. To obtain the very best raw ingredients, the grapes are harvested by hand and then aged in new and used French oak barrels for 12 months to add extra complexity to the wine. The result is a deep, intensely flavoured wine which exudes ripe blackberries, cassis, smoke and black pepper along with a silky smooth texture and gentle tannins. Perfect served with barbecued meat or spice-rubbed lamb!
