Marques de Grinon Emeritus 2011
Drink now through to 2030. No need to decant before serving.
“Emeritus” is the Latin word for “worthy”, so it’s no surprise that Marques de Grinon’s iconic wine is a noble blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petit Verdot sourced from the oldest vines in their flagship Dominio de Valdepusa vineyard. The site was actually the first in Spain to be awarded the prestigious D.O. de Pago classification in 2003, recognising the Dominio de Valdepusa as one of Spain’s most exceptional vineyards.
What makes this site unique is the pure limestone soils which are often compared to those found in Burgundy and the extreme continental climate which combines hot summer days with cooler nights and plenty of bright sunshine. These conditions challenge the vines and help to produce powerful, intensely-flavoured wines which are balanced by a vibrant acidity.
Emeritus is an elegant yet bold wine that opens with luscious aromas of crushed blackberries, cassis and raspberries along with smoky and dried herb undertones. Take a sip and you’ll be rewarded with seductive ripe plum and wild berry flavours, well-developed structure and firm tannins. Although this bottle is ideal to drink now alongside hearty dishes like beef bourguignon or roasted red meats, the Emeritus is also an excellent candidate for extended cellar ageing.
