Located in the remote Goričko area of north-eastern Slovenia, Marof winery was founded by entrepreneur Stane Polanič and started producing its wines in 2007. In the vineyard, the approach is ecological, revealing full respect for nature. In the cellar, traditional and non-interventionist methods are preferred, to ensure the best expression of the terroir.
Goricko Noir is a balanced blend of Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, and Merlot. The grapes are selected and harvested by hand, and after a 30-day maceration in oak barrels, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts. The finished wine rests in a mix of barriques and 25 hl barrels for approximately 30 months before being bottled without fining or filtration.
In the glass, the wine displays an intense and deep color with purple tones. Its aromatic profile is broad and complex with layered notes of dark fruits and spices, followed by earthy and smoky hints on a background of leather and tobacco. On the palate, it is characterful, powerful, and dry. It has a velvety texture and well-integrated tannins. It is vigorous with a balanced acidity and a long and spicy finish. It is a wine that has the capacity to age well for over a decade but can be enjoyed now in combination with game meat, or braised beef in mushroom sauce.
