Located in the northeast part of Slovenia, not far from the Hungarian border, Marof is a prestigious winery that owns about 40 hectares of land with vineyards spread across the small and little-known sub-region of Goričko. In its approximately 20 years of operation, the company has quickly achieved popularity thanks to its exceptional wines resulting from the use of state-of-the-art facilities and traditional winemaking techniques.
The Sauvignon grapes are hand-picked from an estate vineyard located at an altitude of between 320 and 350 meters above sea level on soils composed of basaltic tuff, slate phyllite, sandy calcareous marl, and residual marine sediments. The 29-year-old vines enjoy southern exposure and a warm microclimate tempered by the presence of woods. After the harvest, fermentation occurs with indigenous yeasts, and the finished wine then rests for approximately 35 months on the fine lees in 25 hl barrels, before being bottled and remaining in the bottle for another 10 months.
Marof Bodonci Sauvignon displays a brilliant color with golden yellow tones. Its aromatic profile is fragrant and ripe with notes of tropical fruits and stone fruit followed by hints of toasted almonds and spices. On the palate, it is intense, juicy, concentrated and mineral. It has a vibrant acidity and a long, complex finish that recalls citrus and vaguely sweet and sour notes. It is perfect with seafood and makes a refreshing aperitif.
