This popular, light-hearted California Zinfandel is easy to drink, yet still presents immense complexity with its earth tones, cedar and tea notes blending with the jammy, sweet oak flavours. The nose is light and fruity with inviting floral hints. Undertones of peony, nutmeg and cocoa. Very dry, spicy and woody yet intensely sweet with raspberry and red plum fruit nuances throughout underscored by a rich, succulent spiciness. Full mouthfeel features complex, rich texture with refreshing acidity and fleshy tannins. This is a dry, full bodied red with an excellent length that benefits from aeration. The finish is approached beautifully by the wine’s well-structured balance and lingers endlessly. Bright acidity means that this is a very food-friendly wine, so it’s the perfect selection for grilled meats, vegetable dishes and light fare alike. Goat cheese or lamb are especially recommended pairings. A perfect BBQ wine.
This well-rounded, good value wine clearly benefits from the winery’s stringent canopy practices, where the vines are heavily pruned and cropped to ensure that the nutrients go directly to the grapes, resulting in concentrated, full-flavoured wines. It is a fitting representation of the classic Californian varietal, Zinfandel, which is one of the original grapes to be cultivated in the region. Liberty is renowned for their excellent value, matched with quality cultivation practices and accessible yet refined offerings. The 2012 Zinfandel is no exception. Some decanting will allow for the complexities in full force. Serve between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius.
