Julien Sunier was born in the Burgundian capital of Dijon and despite not coming from a winemaking family he fell in love with wine while working for the legendary Christophe Roumier. He then learnt the winemaking trade in New Zealand and California before returning to his homeland to work for Nicolas Potel in Nuits Saint-Georges and Jean-Claude Rateau in Beaune.
In 2008 Julien was finally able to pursue his own project based on three exceptional hilltop vineyards in Fleurie, Morgon and Régnié which he farms organically. Harvesting is done by hand and the must is fermented with wild yeasts before being aged in used Burgundy barrels for up to 11 months which he gets from his old friend and mentor, Christophe Roumier.
Julien’s Morgon offers an attractive deep ruby hue and generous notes of crushed berries, cherry liqueur, and granite on the nose. The first sip reveals a crisp freshness, medium body, and smooth tannins along with an impressively long finish. The bold yet elegant flavour profile makes this top Beaujolais a great match for smoked duck salads or Peking duck dishes as well as seasonal game like venison and partridge.
