Pungent aromas of red berries and sour black cherry emerge on the nose of this deep scarlet red wine. It is crafted from 100% Pinot Noir, grown in estate-owned vineyards in Yarra Valley, South East Australia. The Hoddles Creek Estate vineyards are located on the cooler side of the Yarra River, on steep slopes that prevent the use of machinery.
Hoddles Creek is a family affair, established by the D’Anna family. The winery is based around a prime plot of grape-growing land, which was owned by the family since 1960, but was unplanted until 1997. The winery is spearheaded by Franco D’Anna, the Young Gun of Wine People’s Choice winner for 2010, and a massive proponent of Yarra staples such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
This estate Pinot Noir drips with classic fruit flavours: red cherry and raspberry mingle with hints of orange peel, mint leaf and spice. It is a firm, streamlined wine, with a vibrant vein of acidity and finely grained tannins. Considered to be one of Australia’s best value-for-money Pinot Noir, this is a must-try for any fan of the French grape. Consider pairing it with earthy dishes such as mushroom risotto, herby roast chicken, or turkey.
