This unusual Italian red is made from the rare Verduno Pelaverga grape which is only found in its namesake commune of Verduno as well as the neighboring villages of Roddi and La Morra. There are just 20 hectares of Verduno Pelaverga vines in existence today which produce light, spicy red wines quite unlike anything else found in the region.
Fratelli Alessandria is one of the three main producers of Verduno Pelaverga single varietal wines with their vines grown on a series of high elevation plots on limestone soils. Impressively aromatic and intense, the wine opens with hints of rose hips, black pepper, blueberries and leather. The first sip reveals a bright acidity, medium body, and juicy crushed berry flavours with a clean, pure finish.
Fratelli Alessandria was founded in 1870 in the charming Piedmontese hilltop town of Verduno and is still in the hands of the Alessandria family to this day. Once the heartland of the Barolo wine region where the first modern-style Nebbiolo wines were made, the commune is enjoying a revival today thanks to the hard work of individuals like Gian Battista, Alessandro and Alessandro’s son, Vittore who run the estate.
